People around the globe are scared about the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Listening to the news about travel bans quarantines, new deaths, lockdowns, and isolation, social distancing, wearing a mask, and hand hygiene are increasing their concerns. Many people even suffer from depression but it is recommended not to panic.
Coronavirus is a kind of SARS, which is spreading like fire across the world. The first thing that vanished from the market was protective masks. N95 and surgical masks demand increased, so the Federal government approved the use of KN95 masks, which are produced in China.
What is coronavirus 2019?
In December 2019 coronavirus that originated in Wuhan’s food market, spread rapidly beyond the borders of China in the US and Philippines. It got named officially SARS-CoV-2. It affected thousands of people across the world and is consistently infection hundreds with the passing hour. Even the death toll is skyrocketing. It is called COVID-19 and its spreading style differs from other viruses.
What causes COVID-19?
Coronavirus is zoonotic means it develops first in animals and is passed to humans via contact. Once the person gets infected from animals, it spreads from one person to another via respiratory droplets. It is the wet gunk that moves in the air when someone sneezes or coughs.
When the droplet gets inhaled via respiratory tracts the virus activates and causes infection. Coronavirus is not yet related to a particular animal. According to research, the virus is transmitted from bats to animals either pangolins or snakes and ultimately transferred to humans [like in Wuhan’s open food market].
What are COVID-19s symptoms?
The virus gets carried for duration of 2 to 14 days before revealing any symptoms. The common symptoms recorded until now include –
- Breath shortness
- Cough that turns severe overtime
- Mild fever that increases gradually
In some people, the symptoms are severe and need emergency help.
- Trouble in breathing
- Lips or face turns blue
- Excessive drowsiness
- Persistent pressure or pain in the chest
The symptoms are still being studied.
Who is at more risk to contract coronavirus?
If you are exposed to the droplets of sneezing or coughing by a person who is carrying coronavirus, then you are at an increased risk of getting infected.
You are also at high risk when you are taking care or living under the same roof with a coronavirus detected person, especially when you are not taking proper precaution.
People with specific health conditions and the elderly are at high risk because their immune system is already compromised. Contracting coronavirus can cause severe complications and even lead to death.
Diagnosis and treatments
Just like other viral infections get diagnosed via saliva, blood, or tissue sample coronavirus gets identified. The cotton swab is used to retrieve samples from inside the mouth or nostrils. In terms of treatment, currently, there is no specific treatment recommended for COVID-19.
Vaccines and medications are under study. However, anti-viral medications, ventilators for breathing support steroids for reducing lung swelling and blood plasma transfusion are used.
Healthcare agencies recommend people take precautionary measures like frequent hand wash, social distancing, avoid touching face, and choose social isolation if you have flu or runny nose symptoms.
